Signs & Symptoms of Substance Use Parents May Notice in Their Teen
It’s vital to be able to identify signs and symptoms in your child that could indicate substance misuse, especially if you see sudden or extreme changes or multiple signs occurring simultaneously.
These include:
- Mood swings and behavioral issues, such as low energy, lack of motivation, anxiety, depression, impulsivity, aggression, or social withdrawal2
- Physical issues, such as ongoing lethargy or an adverse change in hygiene or appearance
- Mental issues, such as poor concentration and inability to stay focused on tasks
- Abnormal sleep patterns (e.g., sleeping too much or too little)
- Signs of intoxication, including constricted/dilated pupils, red eyes, impaired motor coordination, unexplained laughter, or slurred speech
- Symptoms of withdrawal, such as nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, sweating, difficulty sleeping, muscle cramping, and mood changes3
- Evidence of substance use in the teen’s room or their personal effects, such as empty alcohol or prescription bottles, scales, pipes/bongs, vaporizers, rolling papers, burnt spoons or tin foil, needles, etc.
- A significant decline in academics, including poor grades, disruptive behavior in the classroom, disciplinary action, or chronic tardiness or absenteeism without approval
- Negative interactions with, or avoidance of, family members, friends, classmates; changing peer groups; or a reluctance to introduce new friends to family members
- Unexplained missing prescription drugs, such as opioids, amphetamines, benzodiazepines, or sedatives belonging to other family members4

Our Levels of Care for Teen Substance Use Recovery
Our treatment center offers multiple levels of care to ensure the treatment teens receive is effective and appropriate to their individual needs. These levels include medical detox, inpatient/residential programs, and aftercare support.
Medical Detox
Once an individual becomes chemically dependent on a substance, abruptly cutting back or stopping use results in withdrawal symptoms. Depending on individual factors and the substance in question, these symptoms can range from mildly unpleasant to life-threatening. Whatever the case may be, our medical detox program offers teens around-the-clock supervision by medical professionals who can administer medications to reduce the severity of symptoms and ensure this process is safe and as comfortable as possible. Teens may also receive therapy during detox to support them psychologically and initiate the recovery process.
Residential Care
Inpatient or residential treatment is the highest level of care, throughout which teens will reside at the treatment center 24 hours a day for several weeks. Residential treatment affords teens a structured daily schedule consisting of a variety of traditional and complementary therapies, group participation, creative arts outlets, and family involvement activities. Moreover, because teens typically have academic responsibilities, we collaborate with schools to provide teens with two hours of dedicated academic instruction each day.
Aftercare
Aftercare treatment is a core component of recovery, as it provides teens with the continual support they need to maintain abstinence once they’ve completed formal treatment and are readjusting back into their normal lives. Throughout aftercare, we place a strong emphasis on relapse prevention strategies and offer continued access to evidence-based care, such as support groups and behavioral therapy.
Adolescent Substance Use & Mental Health Treatment Therapies
We believe it is vital for every teen to receive the holistic care they deserve. For this reason, we have created programs that consist of a diverse range of traditional and complementary therapies and services, including:
- Cognitive behavioral therapy
- Dialectical behavior therapy
- Individual therapy
- Group therapy
- Family therapy
- Trauma-focused therapy
- Psychoeducation
- Motivational interviewing
- Medication-assisted treatment
- Support group participation
- Exercise and nutritional education
- Mindfulness meditation and yoga
- Creative arts therapy
This comprehensive approach aims to provide teens with inclusive care that reflects the physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual elements of their personal lives.

Frequently Asked Questions About Our Teen Rehab Program
Does insurance cover the cost of treatment?
Yes. Because of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA), insurance typically covers all or part of the cost of treatment. To find out what your insurance covers and other questions about treatment costs, contact one of our admissions counselors. They can run a health insurance benefits check and explain any covered or out-of-pocket costs. Additional payment options are available for those who are uninsured.
How much does the program cost?
Program costs can vary widely because treatment is custom-tailored to each individual’s needs and goals. To receive an estimate on program costs, contact an admissions representative at 888-483-1517.
Can I contact my child during treatment?
Yes. In fact, we encourage family connection and consistent communication throughout treatment to support your child’s progress. Our staff can advise you on the best ways to stay in contact.
Can I visit my child during their stay?
Yes. We have designated times for family visits. These visits are structured to allow families to maintain a connection with their child while ensuring their success in recovery is both benefited and supported.
What should my teenager bring with them to treatment?
We provide each teen with a detailed list of recommended items, such as personal clothing and hygiene products, to bring prior to admission to make sure they have everything they will need. In addition, to ensure a safe environment for all teens in recovery, we will provide a list of prohibited items.
Will my teen be comfortable during their stay?
Absolutely. We believe comfort is critically important in recovery. We have therefore designed our facility with safety and comfort in mind, and we ensure each teen’s well-being with supportive supervision around the clock.
Can my child leave the facility during treatment?
No. Teens are not permitted to leave the facility unsupervised during treatment. This rule is to ensure they remain safe and focused on recovery.
How will treatment affect my teen’s schooling and education?
Teens almost always have academic responsibilities. For this reason, we integrate educational support into their treatment plan to maintain their progress. By working with their school, we provide each teen with two hours of daily academic instruction.
Can my teen take their medications during treatment?
With your consent, our healthcare professionals can safely administer your teen’s current prescribed medications and prescribe new medications if needed.
Will my teen be housed with other adolescents?
Yes. Other teens will be receiving treatment at the same time and in the same facility as your teen. This provides teens with a community of peers who understand and share their experiences and challenges.
Will my teenager have their own room?
Private rooms are available on a first-come-first-serve basis. Although some teens value privacy, many others benefit from the active support and camaraderie of another peer they room with throughout treatment.
Will my child receive therapy and mental health counseling?
Programs may include individual therapy, group therapy, and counseling that address co-occurring mental health issues alongside any substance use disorders.
What aftercare options are available?
To address ongoing needs following treatment, your teen will be continually supported with an aftercare plan as they transition back into everyday life. Aftercare plans may include ongoing individual therapy and counseling, support group participation, and connection to community resources to sustain a long-lasting recovery.
