Signs & Symptoms of Substance Use in Teens

Adolescence is a time of mental and physical changes that can be trying for everyone in the family.1 Behavioral issues, such as experimentation and testing limits, are typical during the teen years, but sometimes, these issues can also include substance use. A major concern with teen substance use is that it can lead to a substance use disorder, which is why it’s critical to address your concerns early on.2

Having a discussion with your teen is a good idea, even if you’re not entirely sure if they’re using drugs or alcohol. If you’ve spotted any of the following warning signs and symptoms of substance use in your child, you should be prepared to take action and seek professional guidance:3
  • Withdrawal from family and friends.
  • Decreased motivation compared to usual.
  • Signs of depression or a sullen demeanor.
  • Secrecy, lying, or sneaking around.
  • Abrupt changes in their friend group.
  • Missing school or work regularly.
  • Frequently violating curfew.
  • Increased arguments with family members.
  • Neglecting personal hygiene, such as skipping showers or not changing clothes.
  • Detectable odors of alcohol or smoke.
  • Presence of drug paraphernalia, like pipes or rolling papers.
  • Sudden weight fluctuations.
  • Visible track marks on arms or legs (or wearing long sleeves or pants in warm weather to conceal them).
  • Unexplained nosebleeds that are not related to allergies or a cold.
  • Persistent fatigue or lethargy.

Our Approach to Adolescent Behavioral Health & Mental Health Treatment

We believe in an empowerment-based, holistic method to addressing adolescent substance use and mental health concerns. Our approach focuses on drawing out each teen’s unique strengths and talents, and teaching them the skills they’ll need to avoid substance use, cultivate true well-being, improve health, and sustain long-term sobriety.

Prior to starting treatment, our treatment team will conduct a comprehensive evaluation with your teen to examine all of their medical, psychological, emotional, social, and educational needs. We’ll then develop a multifaceted, integrated, and personalized treatment plan for your child based on our findings. Our program focuses on treating the underlying influences that led to the substance use, not just the overt physical or mental health symptoms.
