Signs & Symptoms of Substance Use Parents May Notice in Their Teen

Many behaviors that youth display in adolescence can be considered relatively normal, but may also be suggestive of substance misuse. It’s important to take notice if there are several signs occurring at the same time, if they seem to occur out of the blue, or if the behaviors are extreme.2

These behaviors may include:
  • Mood, anxiety, or behavioral issues that have progressed rapidly, such as low energy and productivity, apathy, sadness, a lack of self-control, irritability or aggression, and social withdrawal.3
  • Physical or mental changes, such as lethargy, poor concentration, memory lapses, insomnia, or a decline in hygiene or appearance.
  • Signs of intoxication, such as dilated or constricted pupils, red eyes, difficulty walking, unexplained laughter, or slurred speech.
  • A noticeable decline in academic performance, such as failing exams, bad grades, poor behavior in the classroom, disciplinary action, and missing school without your approval.
  • Poor interactions with, or avoidance of, family members, friends, classmates, and teachers; changing peer groups; and a reluctance to have parents/family get to know new friends.
  • Finding substances, paraphernalia, or evidence of drug or alcohol use in the youth’s room or within their personal effects, including items such as scales, pipes, bongs, lighters, balloons, tabletop vaporizers, and rolling papers.
  • Medications, especially opioids, benzos, or amphetamines, prescribed to other family members are missing without explanation.
The presence of multiple warning signs is a strong indication that there may be a problem, but that is not a certainty. Moreover, the next step would be to have the youth screened for substance use by a professional.

Our Levels of Care for Teen Substance Use Recovery

We offer multiple levels of care to ensure your teen receives effective treatment while engaging in a program most appropriate for their needs. These include medical detox, inpatient/residential programs, virtual treatment, and aftercare.

Medical Detox

When adolescents develop dependence on substances, reducing or discontinuing use typically leads to withdrawal symptoms. While some substances can cause severe, life-threatening withdrawal symptoms that require medical oversight, and others cause significant discomfort, often resulting in relapse.

Medical detox is a clinical program that provides individuals with 24/7 supervision and interventions to ensure they undergo withdrawal safely and comfortably. During this time at our Newark-area teen detox, teens can also participate in therapy sessions while being monitored for complications and administered medications if needed to control symptoms and improve comfort.

Residential Care

Residential treatment is a level of care in which teens reside at our treatment facility for 28–60 days. This program includes structured daily scheduling, including traditional and complementary therapies, creative arts, group participation, and more. We also provide academic support in collaboration with their school, dedicating two hours each day to ensure they stay on track with academic progress.

Virtual Treatment

Virtual behavioral health care employs telehealth services to provide therapy and support to adolescents in the comfort of their own homes. This innovative approach allows teens to engage in individual and group therapy sessions through secure video calls, phone calls, or messaging, making it convenient for them to access care without the barriers of transportation-related issues or scheduling conflicts.

Aftercare

Aftercare treatment is a vital component of addiction recovery for teens, providing ongoing support to help them maintain sobriety and prevent relapse after intensive treatment has been completed. While placing a strong emphasis on relapse prevention, aftercare includes various evidence-based services, such as behavioral therapy and support groups.
