According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 6 million individuals, ages ranging between 3 and 17, were diagnosed with ADHD during a 3 year time period. Defining & Understanding Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
ADHD is characterized by a pattern of inattention, and/or hyperactivity or impulsivity, that interferes with an individual’s daily functioning or development. ADHD is a chronic condition that can negatively impact an individual’s relationships, productivity, and their self-esteem. (3)Â
The Various Types of Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
There are 3 different types of ADHD presentations, each one with their own specific characteristics and criterion.Â
Specific types of ADHD presentations include: (4)Â
- Predominantly Inattentive Presentation – This type of ADHD is characterized by difficulties paying attention to details, following instructions, finishing a task, or staying organized.Â
- Predominantly Hyperactivity-Impulsivity Presentation – This type of ADHD is characterized by feelings of restlessness, difficulties sitting still for long periods of time, or behaviors such as speaking at inappropriate times.Â
- Combined Presentation – This type of ADHD includes symptoms of both the inattentive presentation and the hyperactivity-impulsivity presentation.Â
An individual experiencing ADHD may see a change in their symptoms or presentation over time. Â
Causes & Contributing Factors for ADHD
The exact cause of ADHD is currently unknown. However, research has found various risk factors, including genetics, that play a role in whether or not an individual develops ADHD. (5)Â
Additional risk factors associated with the development of ADHD include: (6)Â
- Experiencing a brain injury.
- Being exposed to environmental risks, such as lead, during pregnancy or infancy.
- Alcohol, tobacco, or other substance use during pregnancy.Â
- Premature birth or delivery.Â
- Having a child with a low weight at birth. Â
Common Signs & Symptoms Associated with ADHD
Being able to recognize the signs and symptoms associated with ADHD can help individuals determine if they are experiencing it, and the necessary next steps.Â
Signs and symptoms associated with ADHD include: (7)Â
- Failing to pay close attention to detail at school, work, or other important life areas.Â
- Having trouble staying focused on specific tasks.Â
- Not seeming to listen to others when spoken directly to.
- Not following through on specific instructions at school, work, or other important life areas.Â
- Having difficulties organizing tasks, items, or activities.Â

- Being easily distracted.Â
- Being easily forgetful.Â
- Constantly fidgeting, squirming, or tapping hands or feet.Â
- Leaving one’s seat when expected to remain seated.Â
- Running or climbing when it is not appropriate.
- Feelings of restlessness.
- Talking excessively.Â
- Blurting out an answer before the question is complete.Â
- Difficulties waiting in line or for one’s turn.
- Interrupting or intruding on others.Â
Symptoms must be present for at least 6 months in order to meet the diagnostic criteria for ADHD. (8) Some of the symptoms associated with ADHD, such as difficulties focusing, may be present in individuals who are not experiencing ADHD. It is important to note that those experiencing ADHD do not grow out of these behaviors and symptoms may persist or grow in severity if left untreated.Â

Diagnostic Process for Evaluating Adult ADHD
There are some differences between ADHD in adults and in children. For example, a child must meet 6 of the symptoms, while an adult must meet 5 of the symptoms before an ADHD diagnosis can be given. (9) Furthermore, a child experiencing hyperactivity may present their symptoms by climbing on objects, while an adult may present their hyperactivity by experiencing restlessness. There are also additional criteria that need to be met, in addition to the presence of symptoms before an ADHD diagnosis can be given to an adult.Â
If you, or someone you love, are experiencing symptoms of ADHD, it is important to receive a diagnosis from a medical provider in order to determine which type of ADHD is present and which treatment option would be most beneficial. Additionally, those qualified to provide an official diagnosis must consult with family members, teachers, or other individuals who are aware of the individual’s symptoms in different settings.Â
Bishop Health can provide each individual with an in-depth psychological assessment to identify exactly which mental health concern, or ADHD presentation, is present. Contact us today to get started.Â
