Defining & Understanding Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
ADHD is a chronic disorder marked by persistent inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, which interferes with a person’s daily functioning or development and adversely impacts relationships, productivity, and self-esteem.Â
The Various Types of Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
ADHD comprises three main presentations, each with specific characteristics and diagnostic criteria.Â
Specific types of ADHD presentations include:
- Predominantly Inattentive Presentation—This type of ADHD, often called ADD, is characterized by difficulties paying attention to details, following instructions, finishing a task, or staying organized.Â
- Predominantly Hyperactivity-Impulsivity Presentation—This type of ADHD is characterized by feelings of restlessness, difficulties sitting still for long periods, or behaviors such as speaking at inappropriate times.Â
- Combined Presentation—Combined presentation includes symptoms of both inattentive presentation and hyperactivity-impulsivity presentations.Â
A person experiencing ADHD may experience a change in their symptoms over time. Â
Causes & Contributing Factors for ADHD
Experts believe that no single factor alone is responsible for the onset of ADHD. However, research has pinpointed various risk factors, such as genetics, that play a role in the development of ADHD. Â
Additional risk factors associated with the development of ADHD include:2
- Exposure to environmental risks (e.g., lead) during pregnancy or at a young age).
- Alcohol and tobacco use during pregnancy and other pregnancy-related factors
- Child health conditions, including head injuries.
- Parental mental health and family environment.
Common Signs & Symptoms Associated with ADHD
Having the ability to identify the signs and symptoms associated with ADHD can help individuals determine if they or other family members are being affected.
Signs and symptoms associated with ADHD include:Â
- Failure to pay attention to details at school, work, or other important life areas.Â
- Losing important items necessary for school, work, etc.
- Not following through on specific instructions.Â
- Poor attention to others when spoken to directly..
- Difficulty staying focused on tasks.Â
- Difficulty organizing tasks, items, or activities.Â
- High distractibility.
- Forgetfulness.
- Constant fidgeting, squirming, or restlessness.
- Running or climbing when inappropriate.
- Excessive talkativeness.
- Interrupting or disturbing others.
- Difficulty waiting in line or for one’s turn.
Symptoms must persist for at least 6 months to meet the diagnostic criteria for ADHD. Some of the symptoms associated with ADHD, such as difficulty focusing, may be present in those who are not experiencing ADHD. However, those experiencing ADHD do not grow out of these behaviors, and symptoms may continue and increase in severity if left unaddressed.Â

Diagnostic Process for Evaluating Adult ADHD
Key differences exist in how ADHD affects adults vs. children. To diagnose ADHD in adults and adolescents aged 17 years or older, only 5 symptoms are required instead of 6 as for young children. Also, symptoms often present differently at older ages. For example, in adults, hyperactivity may appear as severe restlessness or wearing others out with their activity. There are also additional criteria that need to be met before an adult can be diagnosed with ADHD.
If you or someone you love is experiencing symptoms of ADHD, it is important to receive a diagnosis from a medical professional to determine which type of ADHD is present and what treatment option would be most effective.
