At Bishop Health in Delray Beach, Florida, we offer comprehensive and specialized care to individuals struggling with behavioral health conditions. We provide evidence-based therapies and personalized treatment plans to support clients on their wellness journey. Our intensive outpatient programs (IOP) help individuals address the mental and emotional challenges they face in their daily lives.

What Is an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for Mental Health?

Intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) are structured programs that typically involve several hours of therapy and support services each week. IOPs provide a higher level of care than standard outpatient treatment but don’t require 24/7 supervision or overnight stays like residential programs.

This level of care is flexible enough to allow individuals to maintain their daily responsibilities and routines while receiving treatments similar to those offered in inpatient settings. IOPs address various behavioral health issues, including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and more.

Key Benefits of IOP Programs Include:

  • Flexible schedules
  • Individualized care
  • Group support
  • Comprehensive treatment plans
  • Cost-effectiveness

There are many more potential benefits of IOPs. You are encouraged to learn more and contact Bishop Health if you have further questions or are ready to seek professional help and begin your journey.

Psychiatry & Medication Management

Psychiatrists are licensed physicians who’ve completed extensive training in psychiatry.  The American Psychiatric Association defines psychiatry as a branch of medicine that includes diagnosing, treating, and preventing various behavioral health issues, according to the American Psychiatric Association (1).

Psychiatrists can provide individual therapy to help people with mental health conditions develop healthier coping skills to manage their symptoms. Moreover, they can prescribe psychiatric medications as an adjunct approach to traditional therapies.

Individual Therapy

Individual therapy, also known as psychotherapy, is an evidence-based approach to behavioral health treatment in which individuals work one-on-one with a psychiatrist or therapist, per the American Psychiatric Association (2). These sessions help individuals address behavioral health challenges, emotional issues, and unique personal struggles.

Group Therapy

Group therapy is another form of psychotherapy in which a small group meets with a trained therapist to learn healthier coping mechanisms, share experiences, and support each other. In this community environment, participants can benefit from the feedback and perspectives of others facing similar challenges.

Medication Management

Medication management is a pharmaceutical approach to treatment supervised by a psychiatrist who prescribes patients medication to address their behavioral health needs. These may include antidepressants, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, stimulants (to treat ADHD), and other prescriptions. Psychiatrists also continually monitor their patients for side effects and make adjustments to their regimen if needed.

Additional Treatment Services in Our Delray Beach, FL Clinic

Our Delray Beach clinic also offers modern, cutting-edge treatments, including  transcranial magnetic stimulation.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)is another novel approach most commonly used for those who are struggling with depression. TMS works by using a magnetic field that targets and activates specific areas of the brain responsible for mood regulation—areas believed to be underactive in those suffering from depression, Mayo Clinic reports. (3) This treatment has been clinically shown to produce lasting results in most cases and is considered safe and effective long-term.

How Do I Know If I Need IOP Treatment?

Determining if you need mental health treatment is relatively subjective. However, if you are experiencing several signs and symptoms, such as persistent feelings of sadness, anxiety, or other mental or emotional challenges, you are encouraged to consult with a professional. Other issues may include mood swings, sleep disturbances, difficulty concentrating, and altered perceptions.

If you are asking yourself if you need to seek treatment, this could be a strong indication that doing so may be vital. Our team at Bishop Health can provide you with a free assessment, identify an appropriate level of care, and develop a personalized treatment plan that meets your needs.

How Long Is the IOP Program?

Bishop Health’s IOPs vary based on individual needs but typically occur three to five days a week for three to five hours per session. Your treatment team will determine the ideal duration of your program, but IOPs generally last at least 60 days.

Will Treatment Affect My Job?

Our IOPs offer several different time tracks to accommodate our clients’ specific schedules, including morning, afternoon, and evening tracks. For this reason, many individuals who participate in our programs can maintain their weekly schedules and continue working without interruption.

Does Insurance Cover IOP Treatment?

Generally speaking, insurance covers IOP, and at Bishop Health, we accept most major and regional health plans. The Affordable Care Act (ACT) of 2010 requires most individual and small employer health insurance plans, including those offered through Healthcare.gov, to provide coverage for mental health services. (4)

For those underinsured or interested in self-pay options, IOP is typically more affordable than either inpatient or partial hospitalization programs.
