What Is Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)?
PTSD is a mental health condition that develops after exposure to trauma. Witnessing or experiencing trauma can often lead to sensations that overwhelm the brain beyond its ability to cope. To protect itself against these intense feelings, the brain can sometimes develop PTSD symptoms. These symptoms are intended to act as a safeguard against the painful experiences of traumatic memories.Â
Events that may lead to the development of PTSD include assaults, natural or human-caused disasters, accidents, combat, other forms of violence, and a host of other situations. Though many people will experience one or more of these traumatic events during their lifetimes, not everyone that has experienced trauma will develop PTSD.
Are There Different Types of PTSD?
Two conditions or types of disorders are closely related to PTSD.2
- Acute Stress Disorder — A type of short-term mental health condition, an acute stress disorder typically presents within the first month after experiencing a traumatic event. If symptoms persist for more than 4 weeks, this disorder may evolve into PTSD.Â
- Complex PTSD (CPTSD) — CPTSD can develop if you experience chronic trauma, such as long-term child physical or sexual abuse, long-term domestic violence, war, etc. People with CPTSD typically have PTSD symptoms in addition to extensive issues with emotion regulation, sense of self, and relationships.
What Causes Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder?
Science has been unable to determine exactly why some people develop PTSD and others do not, even when exposed to the same traumatic experiences. However, studies show that up to 80% of people will experience a traumatic event in their lifetimes, and up to 10% will develop PTSD. Recent studies suggest that people with PTSD experience various brain changes, and they may have abnormal levels of certain neurotransmitters and hormones.2Â
Common Signs & Symptoms of PTSD
Symptoms of PTSD vary greatly in their severity. These symptoms may go undetected altogether or be easily treated without professional intervention. Other times, however, PTSD symptoms can become so severe that they inhibit normal daily functioning. The severity of PTSD symptoms is often based on the severity of exposure to trauma, the length of exposure to trauma, and your ability to cope. These symptoms include:
- Re-experiencing symptoms — These symptoms include flashbacks, dreams, or recurring memories of a traumatic event along with the accompanying intense emotions.
- Avoidance symptoms — Intentionally avoiding people, places, and things that remind you of the traumatic event can be part of PTSD behaviors.
- Arousal or reactivity symptoms — These symptoms include being easily startled or constantly being tense or on alert.
- Cognition and mood symptoms — Being easily angered or displaying depressive symptoms can also be PTSD related.
