Common Causes of Depression

There is no one cause for depression. Rather, complex interactions between one’s biological, environmental, and psychological factors can play a role in whether an individual will develop depression throughout their lifetime.

Common risk factors associated with the development of depression include:2

  • Experiencing adverse life events, such as unemployment or bereavement.
  • Experiencing traumatic life events.
  • Having a personal or family history of depression.

Types of Depression & Symptoms

There are different types of depressive disorders. Each one possesses different characteristics and criterion.

Common types of depressive disorders include:2

  • Major Depressive Disorder
  • Persistent Depressive disorder
  • Perinatal Depression
  • Seasonal Affective Disorder
  • Depression with Symptoms of Psychosis

Typically, an individual experiences a sad, empty, or irritable mood that persists longer than normal sadness when they are experiencing depression.

Additional symptoms associated with depression include:

  • Tiredness or low energy levels.
  • Excessive feelings of guilt.
  • Excessive feelings of low self-worth.
  • Feelings of hopelessness.
  • Difficulties falling or staying asleep.
  • Changes in appetite or weight.

How Depression Works in the Brain

Depression involves chemical changes in the brain. The amygdala is a part of the brain that plays an important role in processing emotions. When an individual experiences stressful life situations, the amygdala is activated, leading to the development of negative feelings about the world or oneself. Chronic levels of stress can lead to neurons no longer being able to function, and a decrease of dopamine in the brain, or the chemical associated with feelings of pleasure.
