We are pleased to introduce Justin Rossen, the Director of Operations at The Plymouth House, a 12-Step retreat in Plymouth, NH. Justin stepped into his current role in February 2024. Before that, he was a 12-Step Contact, guiding clients through their recovery journey.
Before moving into the field of behavioral healthcare, Justin was an Associate Store Manager at a local Lowe’s store, a job he recognized as “good, but not fulfilling.”
“I learned about the opportunity at Plymouth House through my sponsor, who started his recovery journey there,” Justin said. “He told me they were looking for someone to lead 12-Step programs, and he thought I would be a good fit.”
Having benefited from studying the 12-Steps in his own recovery journey, Justin felt he had something to contribute to others coming to terms with addiction.
“Going through the 12-Step process was such a profound experience for me, and I just wanted to share that hope with as many people as possible,” he said. Leadership at The Plymouth House recognized his enthusiasm and passion and subsequently offered him the position.

Not Just A Job
To Justin, working at The Plymouth House hardly feels like work at all.
“I come in and share my recovery experience and try to help clients understand they have a chance at that freedom, too,” he said. “Clients come in feeling hopeless, and through our program, they turn things around to a positive trajectory.”
The closeness of co-workers adds to the ambiance.
“We’re all buddies here,” Justin said. “We really care for and support each other, and that positive environment benefits our clients.

Shared Experience is Their Super Power
A unique aspect of Plymouth House is that most employees are in recovery. Their background makes it easy for them to relate to each client’s experience and serve as living proof that long-term sobriety is possible.
“Working with staff who are in recovery is a great experience for clients,” Justin said. “They can share how they feel, and they know that we understand. We’ve been there, too. We are also examples of a solution and a way out of addiction.”
A Day in the Life
While no two days at Plymouth House are exactly alike, Justin begins each day reviewing intakes and discharges and ensuring his teams are set up to succeed.
“I want everyone to have the information and other resources they need to provide great care to our clients,” he said.
Even though he is in a leadership position, Justin remains close to clients, running a group every day on the literature of the Big Book or another aspect of recovery. Staff meetings with various departments occur several times a week, and leadership meets on an as-needed basis to perform client triage and resolve any issues clients may be experiencing.

Days Off are For Adrenaline and Daughters
When not at Plymouth House, Justin likes to spend time with his wife and two daughters. “We like outdoor activities like swimming, hiking, and just being active,” he said.
Justin also enjoys the adrenaline rush of downhill mountain biking, a throwback to his youth when he and his friends were into BMX biking.
“But drugs and alcohol got in the way for many years,” Justin said. “It wasn’t until I was 31 that I was well enough to try something that was physically and emotionally demanding again.”
For Justin, being able to travel at top speeds down a mountain is just one more perk of living drug and alcohol free.
“When I’m biking, I am so in the moment,” he said. “It’s so life-affirming. I could never have that without recovery.”
