Stimulants boost the activity of certain brain chemicals like dopamine and norepinephrine. Dopamine plays a role in reinforcing behaviors that bring pleasure and satisfaction. Norepinephrine impacts blood vessels, blood pressure, heart rate, blood sugar levels, and breathing.

Some of the most recognized drugs in this classification include:

  • ADHD medications
  • Cocaine
  • Methamphetamine

Stimulant Addiction Detox & Rehab Process

People can become addicted to stimulants in various ways. Some individuals receiving treatment for ADHD or similar conditions may gradually increase their prescribed stimulant doses, which can lead to physical dependence on the substance.

High school and college students may misuse prescription stimulants to enhance their academic performance Without medical supervision. This misuse can often result in addiction. In some cases, people with chronic depression or other mood disorders may turn to stimulants to combat their symptoms.

Chronic mood disorders like depression or bipolar disorder can also drive a person to addiction. These conditions often result in prolonged periods of feeling down, which can make you want to boost your mood, thinking abilities, and energy levels unnaturally.

When you enter rehab at a reliable facility, the process usually begins with an assessment during which a clinical professional diagnoses the severity of your addiction and any co-occurring medical or mental health conditions. This assessment helps in developing an individualized treatment plan.

Additional steps include:

  • Detoxification
  • Inpatient or Outpatient Treatment
  • Behavioral Therapy or Counseling
  • Support Groups
  • Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)
  • Aftercare

Detoxing the Body From Stimulant Abuse or Overdose

When you start treatment, it’s likely that there will still be drugs or alcohol in your body. The priority is to help your body get rid of these harmful substances through a process called detoxification, or detox for short. During detox, you may go through various uncomfortable physical and emotional feelings, making it difficult to go through alone. These feelings are known as withdrawal symptoms.

At Guardian Recovery, we provide a friendly and supportive environment and medically assisted detox to make you more comfortable. Our experienced medical professionals will be there to administer medications that help minimize the side effects of withdrawal.

Duration of Withdrawal Symptoms

After stopping the use of stimulants, withdrawal symptoms can begin immediately, and some of these symptoms can persist for up to 5 months.

The Withdrawal Timeline for Stimulant Abuse

In general, the process of stimulant withdrawal follows a similar pattern:

  • Initially, when you stop using, you feel anxious, sad, agitated, and have strong cravings for the drug.
  • After this initial phase, you may experience mental and physical exhaustion, difficulty sleeping, and worsening depressive symptoms.
  • Around 12 hours after the initial crash, symptoms can intensify and last anywhere from 96 hours to several weeks, accompanied by strong cravings for the drug.

Long Does it Take to Detox from Stimulants?

The duration of these effects varies depending on the stimulant you use. For example, depressive symptoms caused by cocaine usually improve within a few hours, while methamphetamine users may experience longer-lasting depressive symptoms.

During stimulant withdrawal, one of the biggest risks is experiencing intense depression, which can lead to thoughts of self-harm. A readily available doctor or therapist can make a significant difference for someone struggling with harmful thoughts. This is just one of the ways that professional treatment programs can assist individuals during the challenging period of stimulant withdrawal.

Can You Detox from Stimulants on Your Own or Cold Turkey?

Going through detoxification can be a difficult and uncomfortable journey, and having professional support can significantly enhance your safety and likelihood of success.

With the help of a clinical professional, you can effectively manage withdrawal symptoms, address any potential complications like dehydration or high blood pressure, and receive proper monitoring for any pre-existing medical conditions that could be exacerbated during the detox process.

Common Forms of Treatment for Stimulant Dependence

There are several types of treatment available when you are ready to address your dependence on stimulants.

Private Programs

Private substance use disorder facilities offer more individualized and comprehensive care than publicly funded programs. Services are generally more integrated, focusing on aftercare and maintaining long-term recovery.

Public & State Funded Programs

Public and state-funded programs provide a viable option for treatment for those who are uninsured or cannot afford the out-of-pocket costs of privately funded programs. The major downside of these programs is that it is often hard to get enrolled.

Insurance Based

Most privately funded detox and rehabilitation facilities accept major insurance providers. Guardian Recovery will contact your insurance provider to inquire about your insurance coverage. One of our Treatment Advisors will explain your benefits to you in language that is easy to understand, so you will know what your coverage includes. We also offer several options if you do not have insurance and will work with you to decide what is best for you.

Free & Medicaid or Medicare

Medicare is a government-funded medical insurance program for people over 65, younger disabled people, and dialysis patients. Medicaid helps low-income patients pay for medical expenses. These government programs may significantly limit your choice of treatment centers. Centers that accept Medicare and Medicaid also tend to have long waitlists and large client-to-staff ratios and cannot create a program that addresses your personal needs.

How Long Are Stimulant Detox & Addiction Treatment Programs?

Typically, detox and addiction treatment programs last between 30 to 45 days, but the duration can vary depending on your individual circumstances. It’s crucial to remember that staying involved in your recovery community plays a significant role in achieving long-term sobriety. By attending regular support meetings like Narcotics Anonymous (NA) and similar groups, you can maintain connections with people who truly understand your experiences and provide assistance when you face temptations to use substances.

Dual Diagnosis Treatment & Co-Occurring Disorders That May Exist with Stimulant Addiction

Dual diagnosis treatment is a method that supports you if you are dealing with both addiction and mental health challenges. It recognizes that some people struggling with addiction may also experience conditions like depression, anxiety, or bipolar disorder.

Dual diagnosis treatment accepts these conditions are interconnected, and a holistic approach is provided to address both aspects of your well-being. Comprehensive care is offered to support you in your recovery journey effectively.

Rehab Programs & Options for Stimulant Addiction

Once you decide to confront your addiction, various options are available to you. The most suitable program for you will depend on several factors, such as your family and work commitments, insurance coverage, the severity of your addiction, and whether you are also dealing with a co-occurring disorder. It’s important to consider these factors when looking for the program that aligns best with your needs and circumstances.

Inpatient Rehabilitation

Residential or inpatient treatment involves co-living with people who are also working on their recovery. This immersive experience provides a safe environment where you can feel a sense of community and companionship with your peers and receive professional, compassionate care from clinical and medical experts. Treatment duration varies but typically lasts about 30 days.

Outpatient Rehab

With outpatient rehab (OP), you continue to live at home and attend programs two to three times a week, focusing on relapse prevention and healthy coping skills. Vital to long-term recovery, some OP programs also offer vocational or education-related services.

OP therapy allows you to pursue employment or spend more time with family and friends while still having the autonomy to make your own choices.

Partial Hospitalization Program

Most people in recovery participate in a partial hospitalization program (PHP) once they complete residential treatment. PHP programs include a full schedule of activities —like those offered in inpatient programs — five or six days weekly. While in PHP, you will live in a sober or private home and visit the PHP facility during the day.

Intensive Outpatient Program

The next step in your recovery journey may be Intensive Outpatient Treatment (IOP). Once in IOP, you can return to work, school, and other activities, while living in a sober or private home. You will attend treatment for several hours daily, three to five days a week.

Virtual & Online Treatment & Counseling

Virtual addiction treatment makes it easier to access care from anywhere, at any time. Virtual therapy lets you connect with a therapist or counselor through video conferencing platforms like Skype or Zoom. This eliminates travel and allows you to receive treatment without leaving home. Additionally, virtual addiction treatment programs provide 24/7 support services so you can access resources whenever needed.

Relapse Prevention for Stimulant Addiction

Once you have completed a formal rehabilitation program, it is important to understand how to prevent relapse to maintain long-term sobriety.

These approaches may involve recognizing triggers and signs that could lead to a relapse, learning effective coping techniques to handle cravings or stress, and seeking support from social networks to receive guidance and comfort during challenging moments.

To attain long-term sobriety, it is crucial to establish and adhere to a comprehensive recovery program that addresses your emotional, physical, and mental well-being. It’s important to remember that deviating from this program does not indicate a moral failing; it is a common part of life that can be addressed and overcome with the right support.

Addiction is a chronic condition that involves changing deeply-rooted behaviors. Relapse does not mean you have failed. Returning to your program and getting the help you need as quickly as possible is key to regaining your sobriety.
