Our Program
Outpatient Program (OP)
At New Pathway Counseling in Pine Brook, our outpatient program is uniquely crafted around the principles of Functional Integrative Therapy (FIT), an innovative approach designed to foster healing and recovery from addictive disorders. This approach is rooted in helping clients express their feelings, communicate more effectively with others, and embark on a journey towards internal change. One of the core focuses of FIT is to initiate the creation of new neurological pathways in the brain, which enhances the natural release of dopamine, thereby providing healthier avenues for pleasure and reward. Our program introduces clients to social environments and activities that are free from the influence of drug use, encouraging a lifestyle that supports recovery and personal growth.
The goals of Functional Integrative Therapy within our outpatient program are multifaceted and tailored to address both the immediate and long-term needs of our clients. We aim to develop effective problem-solving skills, increase distress tolerance, and enhance the ability to cope with stress and discomfort without resorting to substance use. Additionally, our program focuses on the development of relaxation skills, improving focus, and fostering emotional regulation. Through a structured combination of educational and process groups, individual and group therapy, spiritual guidance, family participation, physical fitness, mindfulness practices, and relapse prevention strategies, we provide a comprehensive treatment model that addresses all aspects of recovery.
Central to our approach is the SOARFIT model, which is designed to reduce internal conflict and create personal harmony. By integrating the body and its energy, the mind, and the spirit with heightened awareness, the model aims to minimize external distractions and enhance communication with oneself. This holistic approach ensures that participants are equipped with the tools they need to navigate the challenges of recovery, fostering a sense of personal achievement and harmony.
Our outpatient program is committed to establishing the most effective treatment for addictive disorders, guided by the principle that challenging the body, mind, and spirit in a positive, rewarding environment can lead to lasting sobriety. We believe that by providing a supportive and nurturing setting, participants will discover that achieving and maintaining sobriety is not only desirable but entirely possible.
For our younger clients, the Adolescent Program recognizes that addiction significantly impacts adolescent brain circuitry in various ways, including causing brain imbalances, altering brain chemistry, changing communication patterns, and affecting brain structures and functions. The program focuses on achieving and maintaining sobriety while educating adolescents and their families about the importance of exercise in achieving emotional balance. It emphasizes the development of a healthy lifestyle, effective stress management strategies, and the creation of a personalized relapse prevention plan. At New Pathway Counseling, our commitment extends beyond treatment; it’s about nurturing a journey towards a balanced and fulfilling life free from addiction.
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
At New Pathway Counseling in Pine Brook, our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is meticulously designed to cater to individuals battling drug addiction through a multi-faceted therapeutic approach. Our program is anchored in the belief that personalized care is paramount to achieving lasting recovery. This belief is exemplified through our Individual Drug Counseling sessions, where clients engage in one-on-one discussions with a professional addiction treatment counselor. These sessions are pivotal for developing and refining coping skills and strategies aimed at halting addictive behaviors and establishing a foundation for sustained abstinence from substance use.
Our counselors emphasize the importance of integrating into twelve-step groups like Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous while also encouraging clients to confront and resolve additional challenges that may influence their recovery, including family dynamics, social relationships, employment issues, and any involvement in illegal activities. Typically, clients attend counseling one to two times a week, ensuring they receive focused and continuous support throughout their recovery journey.
Our IOP further delves into Relapse Prevention Therapy, a critical component designed to fortify clients’ self-control and problem-solving capabilities. Through this therapy, individuals learn to evaluate the consequences of reverting to substance use, identify situations that heighten the risk of relapse, and develop effective coping or avoidance strategies. Complementing this, our Supportive Expressive Therapy sessions offer a safe space for clients to reconnect with their thoughts, emotions, and experiences. This therapy aims to break the cycle of addiction by addressing and resolving interpersonal issues, thereby preventing relapse into harmful behavioral patterns.
Moreover, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) forms an integral part of our program, focusing on enhancing mindfulness, emotional regulation, stress management, and interpersonal effectiveness. This group therapy approach equips clients with the skills needed to navigate the complexities of recovery with grace and resilience. Additionally, Motivational Enhancement Therapy is initiated from the outset of treatment, starting with an initial assessment followed by individual therapy sessions. These sessions are designed to bolster self-motivation, develop a comprehensive plan for ongoing change, and strategize overcoming high-risk relapse situations. Throughout this process, the therapist diligently monitors the patient’s progress, reinforcing their commitment to change and abstinence from substances. Sometimes, family members or significant others are invited to participate in the initial sessions, fostering a supportive environment conducive to recovery.
At New Pathway Counseling, our commitment is to provide an IOP that not only addresses the physical aspects of addiction but also the emotional and psychological facets, ensuring a holistic path to recovery for every individual.
Adolescent Day Program
The Adolescent Day Program at New Pathway Counseling offers a comprehensive approach to recovery and personal growth, tailored specifically for young individuals grappling with substance use and mental health challenges. Operating Monday through Friday, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, this program is designed to provide a structured yet nurturing environment where adolescents can embark on their journey toward healing. An integral part of our program begins with an initial evaluation, including a thorough mental health and substance use assessment to establish a diagnosis and recommend the appropriate level of care. This leads to the development of an individualized treatment plan, crafted with contributions from the adolescent, their family, school, and our interdisciplinary team, ensuring a holistic approach to recovery.
Our daily services encompass a wide range of therapeutic interventions, including evidence-based therapy components, exercise, and both group and individual counseling, with a significant emphasis on family therapy. Understanding the importance of a supportive and involved family unit in the recovery process, our program stands as an abstinence-based recovery initiative, incorporating screening for illicit substances as a core part of our treatment protocol. Furthermore, the program boasts the expertise of a board-certified adolescent psychiatrist to evaluate and manage any co-occurring mental health issues, alongside an educational component led by a state-certified teacher. This multidisciplinary approach guarantees that the adolescent not only remains engaged in their academic pursuits but also receives comprehensive support tailored to their educational and emotional needs, including remedial programming and consistent communication with their school district.
Our overarching goal is to empower adolescents to lead a balanced and healthy lifestyle by eliminating the distractions and obstacles that hinder their ability to overcome life’s challenges. By delving into the root causes of their substance use and addressing any resultant emotional imbalances, our program offers a path to understanding and healing. We provide a safe space for processing traumatic experiences, interpersonal conflicts, and family dynamics, alongside navigating physical and emotional difficulties. Through our tailored interventions, we aim to validate each adolescent’s experiences and feelings, reducing negative thought patterns and mitigating unresolved anger. At New Pathway Counseling, we are committed to guiding adolescents toward a brighter, healthier future, equipped with the tools and understanding necessary to navigate a sober life.

The SOARFIT Model
The SOARFIT model, an innovative and holistic approach to addiction recovery, stands as a cornerstone of the treatment philosophy at New Pathway Counseling. This model is designed to transcend traditional treatment methods by integrating the physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of recovery, thereby fostering a comprehensive healing process for individuals struggling with addiction. SOARFIT is an acronym that encapsulates the core components of the model: Sobriety, Optimism, Awareness, Resilience, Fitness, Integration, and Transformation.
Sobriety is the foundational goal of the SOARFIT model, emphasizing the importance of abstinence from addictive substances as a cornerstone for building a healthier life. Optimism infuses the recovery process with a positive outlook, encouraging individuals to envision a future free from the chains of addiction. Awareness enhances self-understanding and mindfulness, enabling individuals to recognize triggers and patterns that contribute to addictive behaviors. Resilience is cultivated to empower individuals to withstand the challenges and setbacks that may arise during the recovery journey.
Fitness, both physical and mental, is a critical aspect of the SOARFIT model, advocating for a balanced lifestyle that supports overall well-being and recovery. Integration refers to the harmonious blending of various aspects of an individual’s life and identity, promoting a cohesive sense of self that is essential for lasting recovery. Transformation represents the ultimate goal of the SOARFIT model, signifying the profound personal growth and change that individuals experience as they progress through their recovery journey.
At New Pathway Counseling, the SOARFIT model is implemented through a variety of therapeutic interventions and activities designed to support each component of the model. This includes evidence-based therapies, physical fitness programs, mindfulness and meditation practices, and community engagement activities, all tailored to meet the unique needs of each individual. This holistic framework ensures that each person’s journey to recovery is supported by a robust foundation of care, compassion, and empowerment, paving the way for a brighter, healthier future.
Aftercare Planning
No addiction recovery program is complete without extensive aftercare planning. The transition back to fully independent living can be challenging, and it is absolutely crucial that a solid plan is in place before inpatient treatment comes to an end. We make sure that every client is prepared with a clear-cut set of instructions and a lengthy list of recovery resources before he or she graduates from our program. We begin instilling many skills that prepare our clients for success in long-term recovery while they are still in treatment, however. In group and individual therapy sessions we work to instill like skills, healthy coping mechanisms, relapse prevention skills and a thorough introduction to the 12 step model of addiction recovery. 12 step programs like Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous remain crucial components of nearly every aftercare plan. Our Admissions Process
