Individual therapy — also referred to as individual counseling, talk therapy or psychotherapy — is the process of which clients work one-on-one with a licensed mental health counselor or a licensed professional counselor. Individual therapy can be utilized for individuals of all ages, however, adolescent individual therapy focuses on age-specific challenges, exploring the personal challenges they face, in a safe and supportive environment. At Guardian Recovery, our adolescent and teen individual therapy program focuses on the development of the necessary tools needed to tackle difficult life circumstances through the use of evidence-based treatment modalities. Contact us today to learn more about our teen mental health and substance use individualized, therapeutic interventions.

Individual & Tailored Care For Teen Substance Use & Mental Health

Individual therapy sessions provide adolescents with the opportunity to dive deep into uncomfortable emotions, past experiences, unhealthy behavioral patterns and contributing factors, ultimately working through the barriers that may have contributed to their mental health or substance use concerns. During each session, our teens have the opportunity to discuss any negative thoughts, feelings, or behaviors they may be experiencing. Additionally, teens may discuss any past life experiences that may have contributed to their current condition, allowing them to work through these emotions with a trained healthcare professional. Over time, our clients identify the areas of their lives that require change, and develop personal recovery goals as they actively work towards long-term healing.

Our Approach to Teen Therapy

At Guardian Recovery, we are dedicated to providing each teen with the most individualized care possible. We work to achieve this goal through constant observation and modifications to a personalized treatment plan that is based on the progress that each client makes, and the challenges that they may continuously face.

According to the National Institute of Health, there are several psychoeducational principles that go hand-in-hand with effective mental health and substance use treatment. These principles are essentially as follows: (1)

  • Mental health and substance use are complex diseases that affect the way that the brain functions. Although they are complex, they can be effectively treated.
  • Effective treatment methods vary depending on the unique needs of each individual client. The services that work for one client might not work as well for another, which is why the overall treatment process must be highly personalized.
  • Mental health and substance use treatment must be easily accessible and readily available.
  • In order to be truly effective, treatment must address every need of the individual, including his or her psychological, medical, social and vocational needs.
  • It is crucial that the client stays involved in treatment long-term.
  • Behavioral therapies – including individual therapy – are the most common and effective methods of treatment for mental health and substance use disorders.
  • In some instances, Medication-Assisted Treatment must be combined with behavioral therapy in order for abstinence to be maintained in terms of substance use disorders.
  • It is crucial that all underlying mental health conditions are adequately addressed.
  • Individual treatment plans must be continuously re-assessed and modified accordingly.
  • Regarding substance use, treatment does not necessarily have to be voluntary in order to be effective. Clients simply have to become willing to receive support over time.
  • Treatment must be closely monitored and often incentivized in order to prevent a return to unhealthy behavioral patterns.

At Guardian Recovery, we take all of the above-listed principles into careful consideration during every stage of our adolescent and teen individualized treatment process.

How Individual Care Helps Your Teen During Recovery

Research has found that more than half of mental health conditions, that persist throughout adulthood, may develop during adolescence. (2) Individualized care provides adolescents with a safe environment to share their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, while allowing them the opportunity to develop coping and emotional regulation techniques. Mental health psychotherapy, and individual care tailored for teens, can help promote protective factors, such as social-emotional skills. (3)

Extensive scientific research supports the fact that individual psychotherapy leads to decreased relapse rates in terms of substance disorders. (4) This is especially true when a client also experiences underlying mental health concerns, such as post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety or depression.

Trauma-Informed Care

According to an article published in the Journal of Dual Diagnosis, individual therapy that focuses on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is extremely effective when it comes to individuals who are experiencing unresolved trauma and mental or substance use conditions. (5) At Guardian Recovery,  CBT is just one of the many proven therapeutic methods we employ when providing trauma-informed care.

What to Expect During Individual Therapy Sessions

At Guardian Recovery, we believe in client-driven therapy, meaning that specific therapeutic goals are determined by the collaboration of each individual client and their licensed therapist.

The topics that are covered in individual therapy differ significantly based on the unique needs of each client. The topics we tend to focus on include:

  • Personal history.
  • Substance use history, if relevant to the individual.
  • Family history of mental health and substance use.
  • What it was like growing up, and the potential presence of any underlying or unresolved childhood trauma.
  • Personal wellness and recovery goals.
  • Other important life goals, such as entering into a long-term career, returning to school and meeting personal educational goals, entering into a healthy and committed relationship, or overcoming long-standing challenges,
  • How to effectively overcome personal triggers and work through uncomfortable feelings and emotions.
  • The grieving process – how to grieve loss in a healthy and effective way.
  • Coping techniques to utilize when experiencing stress, and anxiety/stress management techniques.
  • Communication techniques.
  • Emotional regulation techniques.

Though many underlying issues are resolved while the client is enrolled in treatment, we encourage a continuation of individual therapy once treatment has concluded.
