According to the Monitoring the Future survey, adolescent drug use remained close to the same as it was in 2022. Funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), the Monitoring the Future survey is conducted annually by researchers at the University of Michigan, and it explores the extent of teen substance use throughout the United States.2
Although teen drug use didn’t increase, the number of overdose deaths among this age group rose dramatically. - Illicit drugs other than marijuana: 4.6% of eighth graders, 5.1% of 10th graders, and 7.4% of 12th graders reported using illicit drugs in the past year.
- Narcotics other than heroin: Among 12th graders, 1% reported using narcotics in the last year.
