Commonly Used Substances By Adolescents
According to the Monitoring the Future survey, adolescent drug use remained close to the same as it was in 2022. Funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), the Monitoring the Future survey is conducted annually by researchers at the University of Michigan, and it explores the extent of teen substance use throughout the United States.2
Although teen drug use didn’t increase, the number of overdose deaths among this age group rose dramatically. The dangers of fentanyl use are one factor contributing to the high number of teen overdose deaths. Adolescents are also putting themselves at risk when they purchase pills via social media or take pills from unknown sources.2
The Monitoring the Future survey found that the most commonly used substances by adolescents are as follows:2
- Alcohol: The percentage of teens who used alcohol in the past year was 15.1% of eighth graders, 30.6% of 10th graders, and 45.7% of 12th graders.
- Cannabis: The percentage of teens who used cannabis in the past year was 8.3% of eighth graders, 17.8% of 10th graders, and 29.0% of 12th graders.
- Delta-8-THC: This was the first year this drug was studied, and only 12th graders were surveyed. The results showed that 11.4% had used it in the past year.
- Illicit drugs other than marijuana: 4.6% of eighth graders, 5.1% of 10th graders, and 7.4% of 12th graders reported using illicit drugs in the past year.
- Narcotics other than heroin: Among 12th graders, 1% reported using narcotics in the last year.
