Drug & Alcohol Detox

Are you or someone you love considering drug & alcohol detox? At Guardian Recovery we understand how difficult drug and alcohol withdrawal can be. The symptoms make quitting hard even when someone desperately wants to. The key to overcoming this obstacle is a medically supervised detox where withdrawal symptoms can be eased with medication in a comfortable, supportive, homestyle environment. Beyond physical stabilization, detox is also an important time to plan a path forward in recovery. At Guardian Recovery we first provide a safe, pain-free detox, then we get to work putting together a plan for long-term sobriety. We perform an in-depth initial evaluation and tailor a treatment plan unique to each client’s needs and recovery goals. We begin therapy and offer holistic treatments like acupuncture, meditation and yoga. We encourage a continuum of care, which could include continuing past detox on to an inpatient residentialpartial hospitalization or intensive outpatient program. We ensure every client leaves with a firm foundation on which to build their ongoing recovery.

Drug & Alcohol Detox

Drug addiction and alcoholism are the largest public health threats that Americans of all ages and demographics currently face. Substance abuse and dependence can rapidly ruin lives, affecting every area from work performance to interpersonal relationships. Sadly, the majority of men and women who struggle with addiction fail to seek the clinical care they desperately need. This could be because:

  • They believe that they can detox on their own, and they chronically relapse because of this
  • Addiction inherently produces denial and defensiveness
  • They are “not ready” to quit using drugs or alcohol
  • They are unaware of the recovery-related resources that are readily available to them
  • The do not have the familial or community support needed to seek treatment
  • They believe that they cannot afford to cover the cost of medically monitored detox

At Guardian Recovery we have developed a comprehensive program of drug & alcohol detox that focuses on physical, mental and emotional healing. It is important to keep in mind the fact that treatment does not necessarily need to be voluntary in order to be effective. If someone you love has been struggling with substance abuse or dependence and is unwilling to seek professional help on his or her own accord, we are available to help. We offer intervention services for our future clients and their families — contact us today to learn more.

Commonly Abused Chemical Substances

The National Institute on Drug Abuse lists the most frequently abused addictive substances. According to NIDA the most commonly abused chemical substances include:

  • Marijuana/cannabis
  • Alcohol
  • Prescription medications (prescription opioids, stimulants and central nervous system depressants/benzodiazepines and barbiturates)
  • Opioid narcotics (heroin, fentanyl)
  • Stimulants (methamphetamine, cocaine)
  • Synthetic cannabinoids (Spice, K2) and synthetic cathinones (bath salts)
  • Inhalants
  • Hallucinogens (DMT, ayahuasca, peyote, ketamine, psilocybin, PHP)

If you or someone you love has been abusing any of the above-listed chemical substances, seeking professional clinical care is absolutely essential. Every long-term program of recovery begins with medically monitored detox.

Alcohol Abuse & Addiction

Alcohol abuse and dependence are serious issues throughout the U.S., and alcoholism affects men and women of all ages and in every demographic. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 25.8 percent of men and women over the age of 18 reported binge drinking in the year 2019. During the same year, nearly 14.5 million Americans over the age of 12 suffered from a diagnosable alcohol use disorder (AUD). Only 7.2 percent of those with an AUD received professional treatment of any kind. Because alcohol consumption is so commonplace in most parts of the country, it is often difficult for people to make the distinction between heavy alcohol use and a diagnosable disorder.

Signs and symptoms of an Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) might include:

  • Consuming more alcohol than intended over a longer period of time than intended
  • Attempting to cut back or quit but being unable to do so
  • Spending an excessive amount of time obtaining alcohol, drinking alcohol and recovering from its effects
  • Failing to fulfill personal obligations at work, at school or at home because of alcohol use
  • Giving up recreational and social activities that were previously enjoyed
  • Continuing to drink alcohol despite the physical and psychological harm it is causing
  • Experiencing intense and often overwhelming alcohol cravings
  • An increase in risk-taking behaviors, like driving while intoxicated
  • Developing a physical tolerance
  • Experiencing withdrawal symptoms when alcohol use is stopped suddenly

The symptoms associated with alcohol withdrawal are often severe, and can be life-threatening unless they are adequately treated in a medically monitored detox center. If you or someone you love has an AUD and needs help to quit, Guardian Recovery is available to help.

Drug Abuse & Addiction

Drug abuse and addiction are also major public health threats, and have been for quite some time. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in the year 2018 it was reported that 11.7 percent of all Americans over the age of 12 engaged in illicit drug use at least once. Two percent of Americans reported the non-medical use of a psychotherapeutic drug over the course of the past month. Drug addiction leads to a range of serious consequences, which vary on a person-to-person basis and depend heavily on the type of drug that is being abused. In recent years the U.S. has seen an increase in overdose-related deaths. The CDC also reported that there were 67,367 drug-related overdose deaths throughout the country in 2019. A significant amount of these deaths are attributed to opioid narcotics like prescription painkillers, heroin and fentanyl — however, rates of benzodiazepine overdose have also been on the rise.

Medical detox is most often a necessary first step when it comes to drug addiction recovery. The symptoms associated with drug withdrawal can be unpredictable and severe, and range between extremely uncomfortable flu-like symptoms and grand mal seizures.

Drug & Alcohol Withdrawal

Men and women who use a chemical substance for any extended period of time begin building up a physical tolerance, meaning more of the substance is required in order for the desired effects to be produced. The body and brain become accustomed to the presence of the substance, and when use is suddenly stopped the entire system essentially goes into shock. This leads to the symptoms of drug and alcohol withdrawal, which must be closely overseen and treated in a detox center in order to avoid potential complications. Effective detox programs combine 24-hour medical supervision with medication assisted treatment options, intensive behavioral therapy and a range of other essential services like case management and aftercare planning. At Guardian Recovery we do more than ensure a safe and pain-free drug and alcohol withdrawal — we help each and every one of our clients set a solid foundation for long-term sobriety.

Is Medical Detox Always Necessary?

Regardless of whether you or your loved one has been abusing drugs, alcohol or a combination of the two, medical detox is always a necessary first step on the road to recovery for the following reasons:

  • Without medical supervision, drug and/or alcohol withdrawal can be extremely uncomfortable.
  • Drug and/or alcohol withdrawal can lead to serious health-related complications unless closely monitored.
  • Medication Assisted Treatment is often necessary.
  • Medical detox centers like Guardian Recovery focus on rehab placement services so that there is no time gap between detox and inpatient treatment.
  • Clients are introduced to important recovery tools, like 12-step methods of addiction recovery.
  • The psychological cravings that go hand-in-hand with drug and alcohol withdrawal can lead to relapse unless effectively treated.
