September is National Recovery Month, an observance developed by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration in 1989 as a way to generate awareness around treatment and to celebrate those living in recovery. SAMHSA offers a variety of ways to celebrate your recovery, bring awareness to addiction, and offer hope and support to those struggling with substance use disorders.

Guardian Recovery continues to celebrate our clients in recovery and strives to draw attention to the needs of those struggling with mental health and/or substance use disorders. To that end, we’ve compiled a short list of national events related to National Recovery Month, along with a list of events specific to the states where our facilities are located, namely Florida, Maine, New Jersey, New Hampshire, and Colorado.

Our hope is for everyone who has made it through to the other side to acknowledge and celebrate their hard work, while encouraging those still struggling with active addiction to reach out for the help they need.

To learn more about our facilities, contact us today. Our staff can answer your questions, discuss treatment options, and even verify insurance benefits and/or discuss alternative payment options.  Your best tomorrow starts today. Recovery is a call away.

Celebrate on Your Own

If you don’t want to join in the aforementioned festivities, you can commemorate the month and/or celebrate on your own or with a small group of friends.

  • Share Your Story – Sharing your personal story of experience, strength, and hope is a great way to spread awareness. This does not mean you have to broadcast your whole story on social media or wear a T-shirt that reads, “I got sober. Ask me how.” Rather, you can volunteer to speak at a local recovery meeting or to lead a meeting that is brought into a local detox center once every week. Even sharing your personal story of addiction and recovery one time can leave a lasting impact.
  • Make a Donation – Many treatment programs accept donations, large and small, in order to make quality clinical care as accessible as possible to those in need. Even donating a small amount to a local organization or a reputable treatment program can make a positive impact in someone else’s life. Remember, money is not the only thing you can donate. Donating your personal time and energy is equally as important. Many recovery-related organizations are looking for volunteers.
  • Educate Yourself – Guardian Recovery offers a host of content to educate yourself or to extend this knowledge to others. If you have a loved one who has been struggling with addiction or who has recently entered into a program of recovery, educating yourself is an important step to take. Doing so allows you to shift from a place of resentment and frustration to a place of compassion and understanding.
  • Share Resources – Numerous hotlines, websites, support groups, and other resources are available to those struggling with drug and/or alcohol addiction. If you know someone who could use some support, reach out and share these resources. This is also an ideal time to share your own personal story of recovery.
  • Volunteer at a Local Event – If you feel comfortable attending an in-person Recovery Month event, consider volunteering to help. You might also opt to volunteer at a local recovery meeting house, either greeting people as they come in, leading the meeting, or sharing your story.
  • Organize Your Own Event of Fundraiser – Organize an event or activity in your own community! Take a look at the toolkit provided by SAMHSA for more information.
