When choosing a mental health treatment facility or program, cost is usually an important concern. At Guardian Recovery, we understand this concern and work with you to leverage your insurance benefits. For those with coverage through Aetna, we verify your benefits prior to treatment and then do our best to work within your plan to provide comprehensive and evidence-based care at a cost you can afford.Â
Accessing some types of mental health services with your Aetna coverage can be as easy as visiting your primary care doctor.(1) However, some services may require pre-authorization before your Aetna health plan will provide any coverage. And some plans may provide only partial coverage, or perhaps no coverage for specific types of treatment. Regardless of your Aetna plan—be it Aetna Choice, Aetna Select, Aetna HealthFund, Aetna Health Network, Aetna Medicaid, etc.—the quickest and easiest way to see how your benefits may apply within one of Guardian Recovery’s many facilities is to contact us online or call us directly.

What Types of Mental Health Disorders Are Covered by Aetna Health Insurance?
The benefits offered through Aetna provide coverage for a wide range of services under the umbrella of mental and behavioral health, including coverage for depression, anxiety, trauma, neurological disorders, substance use disorders, and more.
Aetna Health Insurance for Depression Treatment
Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, most insurance providers such as Aetna are legally required to cover mental health and substance use disorders.(2) Mood and depressive disorders fall under this broad mental-health umbrella. However, the level of coverage varies by individual plan, and additional factors such as co-pays, referrals, deductibles, networks, and more can influence actual out-of-pocket expenses.
Mood disorders include, but are not limited to:
- Major Depressive Disorder
- Persistent Depressive Disorder
- Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder
- Bipolar Disorder
Will Aetna Cover Treatment for Anxiety?
Similarly, while individual coverage varies by plan and the aforementioned factors affect out-of-pocket costs, the ACA also ensures that insurance providers (including Aetna) cover anxiety disorders and similar conditions.
Anxiety disorders include but are not limited to:
- Generalized Anxiety Disorder
- Panic Disorder
- Specific PhobiasÂ
- Social Anxiety Disorder

Does Aetna Health Insurance Cover ADHD Treatment?
Neurological disorders such as attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are also covered under the ACA. But again, costs vary according to multiple factors and individual plans.
The best way to determine just how much you’ll pay for treatment is to reach out to a facility directly. Representatives at Guardian Recovery can quickly assess your benefits and help provide general out-of-pocket estimates and/or insights.Â
Type of Plans Provided Through Aetna
Aetna offers a host of individual and family plans as well as Medicare plans, student health plans available through various colleges and universities, international plans, and more. Most Aetna plans are available through employers or the Health Insurance Marketplace. All individual plans purchased through the Health Insurance Marketplace cover mental health treatment as an essential health benefit. This includes coverage for pre-existing conditions.Â
Does Aetna Health Insurance Cover Mental Health Medications?
The use of mental health medications is common throughout mental health treatment. As long as your treatment provider is in-network and the medication is on the plan’s formulary, Aetna typically covers at least part of the cost of mental health medication prescribed by a qualified provider, such as a psychiatrist.Â
Aetna Health Insurance for Therapy & Psychiatric Services
Aetna health insurance can help cover the full or partial cost of therapeutic and psychiatric services. Along with your type of plan, specific factors that affect the amount of coverage you receive can include the type of mental health disorder being treated, your length of stay in a treatment facility, whether the facility is an in-network provider, the length of outpatient or aftercare services, and your individual deductible and/or copay.
If your plan is an Exclusive Provider Organization (EPO) or Health Management Organization (HMO), Aetna may require you to see an in-network provider or to receive pre-authorization from your primary care provider before you begin an inpatient stay or visit a specialist. Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) coverage often doesn’t require primary care provider referrals; plus, there are typically fewer restrictions on your choice of treatment provider.
