Guardian Recovery welcomes patients insured by CareFirst. Our commitment to world-class service includes working hard to minimize your out-of-pocket expenses for detoxification programs and inpatient and outpatient care, by working closely with your CareFirst insurance provider.

CareFirst is a licensee of Blue Cross Blue Shield and has been serving members in Northern Virginia, Washington DC and Maryland for over 80 years. The Guardian Recovery is proud to have CareFirst as a partner throughout its network of drug and alcohol addiction treatment centers.

As the largest insurer in the mid-Atlantic region, CareFirst provides its 3.3 million members with substance use disorder services through its Behavioral Health programs. Every CareFirst plan is ACA compliant, and defines substance abuse as a disease, not a choice, meaning that each plan offers benefits to assist you in your recovery that are equal in scope to any medical or surgical benefits you receive.

Detoxification from drugs or alcohol can only be safely done under the supervision of a medical provider. Thus, this medically necessary service, and any drugs provided to help ease withdrawal symptoms, are covered by your CareFirst Healthcare plan. In addition, CareFirst provides benefits for reasonable and necessary inpatient treatment and outpatient services (whether received during an inpatient, outpatient, or intensive outpatient program). These services include individual or group therapy by psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed clinical social workers. Benefits may extend to occupational therapy, active individualized therapy, family therapy, as well as patient training and education. The limits of your specific CareFirst Healthcare benefits depend on several factors including the state in which your health plan originated; any copayment, deductibles or out-of-pocket maximums for which you are responsible; and your past history of treatment for substance use disorders. Some services within your individualized treatment plan may require pre-authorization. In such a case, Guardian Recovery will work closely with CareFirst to maximize your insurance benefits.

CareFirst Healthcare’s contributions to the cost of your treatment may depend on the following:

  • Your personal past history of treatment
  • The state in which your CareFirst Healthcare plan originated
  • Your CareFirst copayment, coinsurance and/or deductible amounts
  • Your individualized treatment plan
  • The length of your inpatient stay or outpatient program
Individual CareFirst plans purchased through the Health Care Marketplace will vary by type, such as bronze, silver, gold or platinum, and will be either an HMO plan or PPO plan. Typically, bronze level plans (catastrophic plans) offer the lowest monthly premiums but will incur the highest out-of-pocket expenses due to high deductibles and/or copayments, while Gold and Platinum level plans offer the lowest deductibles and copayments, but with higher monthly payments.

An HMO plan, such as BlueChoice HMO or HealthyBlue HMO will typically cover much more of your treatment when you visit an in-network provider. PPO plans, such as BluePreferred PPO and HealthyBlue PPO may provide you with equal benefits regardless of the provider you see.
