New Jersey’s Medicaid program, known as NJ FamilyCare, provides health coverage to millions of low-income residents, including children, pregnant women, parents, seniors, and individuals with disabilities. The program was expanded in 2014 under the Affordable Care Act, utilizing federal funding to increase eligibility. To qualify, individuals must be a New Jersey resident, U.S. national, citizen, permanent resident, or legal alien, with a low or very low income. NJ FamilyCare covers a wide range of healthcare services, including doctor visits, prescription drugs, and emergency care, offering some basic and routine care at no cost. The program is administered by the New Jersey Department of Human Services and is available for enrollment year-round, while the state also operates a health insurance marketplace, GetCoveredNJ, where individuals and families can purchase affordable coverage with financial assistance options.
