Preparing for Addiction Treatment
What Should I Pack?

When preparing for inpatient addiction treatment, it is a good idea to make a checklist of everything you will need to bring along. Packing for treatment does not need to be a stressful or overwhelming process. In order to help you prepare, we have created a list for you — if you have any additional questions about what you should bring or leave behind, you are welcome to reach out to us directly at any point in time.

What to Pack for Inpatient Rehab

Clothing

Pack enough comfortable clothing for between 7 and 10 days. Bring along gym clothes, a pair of comfortable sneakers, a swimsuit, and outdoor apparel. Be sure to take the location of the treatment center and the time of year into consideration.

Hygiene Products

Bring along basic personal hygiene items (toothbrush, shampoo/conditioner, deodorant, toothpaste, etc). We ask that you bring these items to treatment unopened, and avoid bringing products that contain alcohol. Please do not bring any wet wipes or cleaning products of any kind. Razors will be provided.

Medication

Bring any medications you are currently taking along with any recently written prescriptions. Medications must be in their original prescription bottles/packaging and clearly prescribed to you. Please do not bring any medications in loose bags, pill dispensers, etc. Our medical team will need to approve any medications that are taken during treatment. Please note — any and all narcotic medication will be disposed of at the time of admission. Bring along any specialized medical equipment you might need, including inhalers, Glucose Meters, Epipens, etc.

Nicotine Products

Smoking cigarettes is permitted. Vapes can be brought to the facility if they are unopened, disposable vapes in their original packaging. Disposable vapes are available for purchase at the facility. Chewing tobacco, dip and pouches can be used with a resealable container to spit into. Nicotine products are allowed in designated areas outside of group and mealtimes. Nicotine cessation options (gum, patches, etc.) are available through the medical department, and will be handed out if and when appropriate. Guardian Recovery has a zero tolerance policy for misusing nicotine products, and staff will revoke the use of these products if guidelines are not followed. All nicotine products must be brought to the facility unopened and in their original packaging. Clients are only permitted to purchase nicotine products while in treatment if they are of legal age.

Cash

Some of our locations have items for purchase, so it is recommended that you bring a small amount of cash with you to treatment. We are able to provide change as necessary.

Reading Materials

Books and magazines are permitted. However, leave behind any reading material that glorifies substance use or might be offensive to other clients.

Personal Identification

Bring along your government issued ID (driver’s license, passport, etc) and any current health insurance cards.

Food & Beverages

Please do not bring any food or drinks to treatment. At Guardian Recovery we employ a full-time culinary staff who provide all meals to our clients. Snacks and beverages are always available in the cafeteria in-between meal times. Depending on which treatment center you are at, meals are either catered or prepared fresh daily on the premises. We cater to dietary restrictions and are happy to prepare individual meals based on your personal needs (gluten-free, vegan, dairy-free, Kosher, etc).

Electronics

Clients can bring a cell phone with them to treatment — however, all cell phones will be locked in the staff office during treatment hours. Our staff members are able to assist clients who may need to access a specific phone number or other piece of information, but there will be no regular use. Please leave all other electronic devices at home. If you have a concern regarding electronic use, please discuss the specifics with your Treatment Advisor prior to admission.

Bedding

Guardian provides high quality linens and bedding for each of our clients. Outside pillows, blankets, sheets and stuffed animals are not permitted at our facilities.

Personal Items

We want you to feel at home during your stay with us. Photos of family and friends are permitted. You are welcome to bring paper, stamps and envelopes to write to your friends and loved ones during treatment. Please keep in mind that you are sharing space, and we encourage you to pack lightly.
