Psychiatrists are behavioral health specialists qualified to diagnose, treat, and prescribe medication for mental health conditions. They have undergone extensive training so they can understand the many factors that interact and lead to the development of mental health issues.

Psychiatrists also devise client-tailored treatment plans and monitor the patient’s responses. Plans often include many traditional treatments, such as medication management and psychotherapies, that help relieve symptoms and foster well-being.

At Bishop Health, our behavioral health specialists in Portland, Maine, provide holistic mental health treatment and various therapeutic services and activities. Using a client-centered approach, we emphasize effective, personalized, evidence-based strategies that factor in each individual’s circumstances and challenges.

Psychiatry Services & Therapy for Mental Health Treatment Near Portland, ME

Bishop Health – Portland offers a wide variety of psychiatric services and therapeutic options. These include individual assessments, customized treatment plans, prescription medication, and continued aftercare and support. Our evidence-based therapies include transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), psychotherapy, outpatient programs, and more.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

TMS is an innovative treatment that involves non-invasive brain stimulation techniques, Harvard Health Publishing reports (1). The process targets certain brain regions responsible for mood by delivering electromagnetic pulses. This technique has demonstrated promising results in addressing a range of psychiatric disorders, such as depression and schizophrenia.

Individual Therapy

In individual therapy, the patient works with a psychiatrist or other mental health professional in a safe and comfortable environment. The goal is to help the person gain insight into their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, understand how they are problematic, and learn to implement healthier, more productive coping strategies.

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP)

Intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) provide regularly scheduled treatment sessions, typically a few hours a day, up to five days a week. Many traditional therapies and activities are integrated into these programs, which are more intensive and structured than regular outpatient treatment.

Mental Health Conditions & Disorders We Treat

The psychiatrists and therapists at Bishop Health are qualified to treat multiple behavioral health conditions, such as:

Some of our clinicians also specialize in the treatment of substance use disorders, such as opioid and alcohol dependence and dual diagnosis disorders.

Depression & Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)

The term “depression” describes a range of adverse emotional states and consistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, fatigue, and apathy. According to the Cleveland Clinic, MDD is characterized by persistent and severe depressive symptoms (2).

Treatment commonly includes cognitive behavioral therapy, medications such as antidepressants, and the development of stress management techniques.

Anxiety

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a mental health disorder characterized by excessive fear, worry, and constant feelings of being overwhelmed, according to the Cleveland Clinic (3).

Unlike phobias, anxiety is not limited to a single action or event but is often associated with many different issues. When frequent worry or panic interferes with your daily life, seek treatment.

Other anxiety disorders also focus on singular areas and include panic disorder, seasonal affective disorder (SAD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-acute stress disorder (PTSD), and separation anxiety disorder.

Treatment for anxiety disorders includes CBT, medication such as antidepressants and antipsychotics, and the development of stress management techniques.

Bipolar Disorder

People with bipolar disorder experience intense emotional states, including manic episodes involving high energy levels, enhanced mood, hyperactivity, impulsiveness, and grandiosity. Conversely, they also experience severe depressive episodes, which can include sadness, feelings of hopelessness, apathy, irritability, and fatigue.

Treatment for bipolar disorder may include CBT, medication such as antidepressants and antipsychotics, and lifestyle modifications such as diet and exercise. Clients also learn how to implement healthy coping mechanisms.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

OCD is an anxiety-related disorder that causes individuals to struggle with managing intrusive, disturbing, and persistent thoughts, feelings, and urges.

OCD is treated with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), exposure and response prevention (ERP), antidepressants, lifestyle changes, and learning to manage stress.

ADHD

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a mental health condition characterized by hyperactivity and difficulties with attention, organization, and task completion.

Treatment typically includes behavioral therapy, medication such as prescription stimulants, and education on stress management strategies.

Substance Use Co-Occurring Disorders

Mental health conditions often occur in combination with substance use disorders (SUDs). When an individual misuses drugs or alcohol and has a mental health condition, it is known as a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder.

Dual-diagnosis treatment involves behavioral therapies, medication-assisted treatment, education on stress management and effective coping mechanisms, and substantial lifestyle changes.

Mental Health Treatment in Portland, ME

Bishop Health offers treatment for behavioral health issues in Portland, Maine. Our highly trained psychiatrists perform thorough patient assessments and prescribe medication to treat a wide range of mental health conditions.

Psychiatric Evaluations

Psychiatrists and behavioral health specialists initially perform comprehensive psychiatric evaluations to garner important information about a patient. This includes their medical and mental health profiles, family background, and any history of substance use. They will also ask the patient about their current mood, thoughts, and behaviors. Clinicians use this information to diagnose behavioral health conditions and develop a personalized treatment plan that meets the individual’s needs, preferences, and goals.

Medication Management

Psychiatrists commonly prescribe therapeutic medications for mental health conditions. Depending on the individual’s diagnosis and symptoms, medications may include:

  • Antidepressants, such as SSRIs like Zoloft and Celexa
  • Anxiolytics, such as BuSpar
  • Antipsychotics, such as Haldol and Seroquel
  • Mood stabilizers, such as Lamictal
  • Stimulants such as Adderall and Vyvanse

Individuals with treatment-resistant conditions may benefit from multiple medications to treat their symptoms more comprehensively.
