Guardian Recovery is pleased to announce it has entered in-network contracts with Cigna and Aetna health insurance. This in-network status removes significant financial barriers to care for people in Colorado struggling with substance use disorders (SUDs).
The agreements mean that Coloradans with alcohol or substance use disorders or who have a co-occurring mental health disorder can now access Guardian Recovery’s comprehensive addiction and recovery treatment program if they have health insurance with either Cigna or Aetna.
Guardian Recovery continues to increase access to affordable behavioral healthcare services and offers hope to Colorado residents affected by addiction. Achieving in-network status with Cigna and Aetna makes services available to thousands of residents who may be affected by addiction. More Coloradans will now be able to access the professional clinical services they need to effectively combat substance use disorders.

Expanding Access to Care & Treatment in Colorado
Guardian Recovery is striving to increase access to effective substance use and mental health treatment, combating escalating rates of addiction and overdose in Denver, CO, and surrounding areas. Accessible treatment is crucial because it helps to ensure that individuals in need of care can access the resources they need to achieve and maintain recovery.
The Denver Department of Public Health & Environment and Denver Human Services reports, “Drug overdose is now the leading cause of accidental death nationwide. The scale of the epidemic has increased the need for resources, not only for the delivery of individual services, but for the alignment, coordination, and systems development that will ensure that those services have the maximum impact.”
According to the Colorado Department of Health & Environment, there were 11,533 emergency department visits or hospital admissions due to drug overdose and 1,799 overdose deaths in 2022.

Levels of Care Covered for Colorado Residents
The agreements with Cigna and Aetna include detoxification and residential care.
Detoxification ensures the body is clear of alcohol or other mind-altering substances. Becoming “clean” is the first and most necessary part of recovery.
Detoxification can be uncomfortable, especially when attempted without close medical supervision. As the body rids itself of foreign substances, the individual may experience unpleasant and sometimes unbearable symptoms collectively known as withdrawal. In a controlled environment, such as a rehabilitation facility, physicians can order medication to ease these symptoms while ensuring the safety of a person undergoing detox.
Detoxing from some substances can also be potentially dangerous. Stopping substances like alcohol and benzodiazepines all at once — sometimes known as going “cold turkey” — can put the body in a severe state of shock that can lead to stroke or seizure.
Medication can help the body make this adjustment without harmful side effects. This use of drugs to assist throughout the cleansing process is known as medical detox. Depending upon the situation, it may include prescription medications and over-the-counter pain relievers to counter the flu-like symptoms some people experience.
Residential inpatient treatment is an immersive treatment model where individuals live in a controlled setting with others in recovery. A staff of medical professionals, licensed therapists, group facilitators, and support staff oversee a busy schedule of recovery-related activities that can include group, individual, and family therapy, recovery meetings, educational workshops, life skills courses, recreational therapy, social activities, yoga, meditation, and 12-Step work.
Guardian Recovery therapists are well-trained in a wide range of therapeutic methods, including cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, motivational interviewing, trauma therapy, and 12-Step recovery modalities.
Through therapy, individuals develop coping mechanisms for dealing with their emotions; communication methods for improving their relationships; techniques for controlling their impulses; life skills for managing their lives; and relapse prevention techniques.
One scientific study published by the National Library of Medicine reports, “Evidence is clear that those who transition to longer-term treatment following detoxification have better outcomes, including reduced drug use, reduced HIV risk behavior, and fewer readmissions to detoxification. Despite the importance of treatment after detoxification, there is often a gap in the continuum of care.”
Transitioning from medical detox to a higher level of care allows for more comprehensive and tailored treatment plans. In residential treatment, individuals can make lasting lifestyle changes, gain a deeper understanding of their addiction, and develop the skills necessary to maintain their recovery.

Are Behavioral & Mental Health Services Covered?
Mental health and substance use are closely linked in a “which came first?” relationship. Individuals with mental health disorders often use substances to self-medicate and alleviate symptoms like anxiety or depression. Conversely, prolonged and excessive substance use can disrupt brain chemistry and contribute to developing or exacerbating mental health disorders.
When a person has both a mental health and substance use disorder, it is called a co-occurring disorder or dual diagnosis. This complex condition can lead to unique diagnoses, treatment, and recovery challenges. The presence of a mental health disorder alongside substance use can significantly complicate the treatment process and hinder the individual’s overall well-being. According to SAMHSA’s 2021 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, approximately 9.2 million adults in the United States have a co-occurring disorder.
Given the complex relationship between mental health and substance use, Guardian Recovery provides integrated care that addresses substance use and mental health disorders simultaneously to facilitate the most effective treatment and recovery. This approach combines mental health treatment, substance use interventions, and support services to break the cycle and promote well-being.
